Elaine M. Junca Women's Imaging Centre is now providing FRAX®, at no additional fee, for bone density patients.
- FRAX is an algorithm developed by the World Health Organization which represents a major breakthrough in early intervention to prevent bone fractures. It identifies patients who have a high risk of experiencing fractures over a period of 10 years but who have not yet crossed the diagnostic threshold for osteoporosis.
- FRAX gives the 10 year probability of hip fracture and the 10 year probability of a major osteoporotic fracture of the spine, forearm, hip or shoulder.
- The FRAX tool combines BMD at the femoral neck and eleven risk factors including age, sex, ethnicity, BMI, prior fracture, parental history of hip fracture, smoking, rheumatoid arthritis, daily alcohol consumption and other secondary causes of osteoporosis.
